Parenting with Confidence (When We Don’t Have all the Answers…)

Well, we’re 3 months into 2020 and we’ve entered uncharted waters, at least for our generation. And during these unscripted times of life, it’s important for us, the parents to be confident. Our kids need us to know what we know. How? If we don’t know what’s happening next, how are we to be confident? Well, we must be confident in what we know. And leave the rest for the experts and tomorrow.

So what DO we know? God’s word.

We KNOW God’s word is true (John 17:17) and alive (Hebrews 4:12).  Moms, our children need to be comforted and covered in God’s word.  This is where we land when we don’t know what to pray and when we don’t know what to say. Truth wins every time.

Our confidence is in the Lord. We trust Him in all situations and we rest knowing He is sovereign and loves us. Here are some scripture to get you started:

2 Timothy 1:7 – For God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power and love and self-control.

Proverbs 14:26 – In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge.

Romans 15:13 – May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Philippians 1:6 – And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

James 4:10 – Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

John 16:23 – In that day you will ask nothing of me.  Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.

James 1:2 – Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds.

Romans 5:1 – Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 5:8 – For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Walk as children of light.

BOOM!

And this is just the beginning!  I would encourage you and your children to start memorizing scripture. Choose one of these a week to memorize as a family.  Not only will these scripture act as a balm to your soul, but your spirit will be uplifted and at peace. We don’t know what tomorrow holds. But we know Who holds tomorrow. Our God reigns and He is victorious.

Speak boldly and confidently, in love, to your children. When you don’t know the answer, it’s okay! We’re not walking encyclopedias! We’re parents! And we need help! And God is our help. Rely on Him when you are afraid and overwhelmed. And let your children see your reliance on The Father.

Here are some daily activities to strengthen your faith during these times as well as ministry opportunities, and just plain fun…

Gather your family daily to pray and read the scriptures.

Share prayer requests corporately.

Call your relatives.

Make cards for the elderly and your neighbors.

Play games and puzzles.

Take walks.

And breathe. This too shall pass. And we’ll be talking about these days at home as the golden days. You’ll see. Use each day as an opportunity to see God at work, lean into Him, follow Him closely and allow Him to be glorified in your life and in your home.
