FRIENDSHIP WITH THE BALL

You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. James 4:4

Such a wise piece of powerful advice I heard yesterday at church. A guest pastor challenged parents with this statement. “Parents, the greatest challenge I see, even in Christian homes, is that we are spending more time teaching our kids to keep their eye on the ball than their eyes on Christ.”

Friendship with the ball is often friendship with the world. The ball isn’t bad. It’s making the ball be the “THING” over God, the giver of all good things.

As you think about how you would like to order your family schedule in this next school year, ask God to show you how to fit in the ball and fit in church, bible study, small group. The ball might lead you to some fun weekend tournaments with friends, a college scholarship, a place on the select team, and just some great fun in general. But, if it’s at the expense of family time, church time, and discipleship time, you might see that what the ball promised to give, actually took what was precious and of most value.

As you approach this next school year, ask the Lord how to enjoy his good gifts of the community and enjoyment that sports bring. As you take steps to order your calendar with Jesus in mind, trust that following that schedule first, will bless whatever else is on that master calendar.
