The Power of Purpose – Rachel Erikson

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

-Romans 8:28

The dictionary defines purpose as: “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.”

Purpose is powerful. It gives us a sense of worth, spurs us into action, and provides direction. It is woven into the very essence of who we are and what we do.

Ask any fellow (past or present) and they will tell you that the fellowship is easily one of the best, but hardest things they have ever experienced. It is equally fun, refining, exhausting, character-building, and amazing. The friendships are beautiful and the Gospel is lived out every day. But the hours can be long and the work can seem overwhelming. In these moments, we push on and remember the purpose behind it all.

From big to small, and mundane to exciting, each task that we perform has a purpose. Each purpose pointing to a greater one: helping to lead youth and families to know and follow Christ. This simple truth can be one of the hardest, but most important, to hold on to.

The truth is: there is purpose in picking up each piece of trash. There is purpose in sending that 100th kid down the zip-line. There is purpose in being frequently asked hard questions and purpose and in serving with a glad heart. And if the purpose isn’t easily seen, we merely need to look a little harder.

God has so extraordinarily designed the Legacy Fellowship program with His greater purpose in mind. Through Outdoor Education, retreats, recruiting, and projects, we are given the opportunity to take part in sharing and following in God’s purpose. This pursuit of purpose makes the hard times more joyful and the good times so much sweeter. It reveals that His ways are better, His thoughts are higher, and His purpose is powerful.
