The Lord is My Portion- Allie Knowles

Do you ever have those days where you just want more of everything? Whether it’s more time doing something, more friends, more stuff, more dessert after dinner…  The other day I was scrolling through Facebook and I found myself getting to this place where I wanted more. I wanted to see my friends more, go out to eat more,  be more athletic, or be more stylish. In my head I went down this rabbit trail of trying to figure out what I wanted more of and how I could get more of it.

I don’t know if this has ever happened to you, but quickly as I realized what was happening I felt this funny feeling inside, this conviction, that what I was wanting and desiring and figuring out how to chase after was not going to satisfy me at all.

I was reminded through scripture that, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73: 26)

You know when you are eating dinner at home and your mom gives you a portion of food on your plate, but your stomach is rumbling and you want more, but she says to, “Honey, eat what is on your plate then you can get more.” Later during the meal you finish what is on your plate and it hits you; you are full and do not want anymore. You feel satisfied in that moment, not stuffed and can’t move and not starving and needing more food immediately… you are just right. Your mom was right all along, she knew how much you needed, you just needed to listen and trust her.

Similar to this example, sometimes we think we need things we really don’t need, or we need more of something when we don’t, or we think something will satisfy us that won’t. God knows exactly what we need, when we need it. He is perfect. His Word says, “LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.” (Psalm 16:5) God is our portion. Our relationship with Him is what will satisfy us most.

When we run to be filled up by the things of this world it will leave us wanting more. But when we go to God and have Him fill up our cup; when He is what we want more of, we will be fully satisfied. The things of this world are not necessarily all bad, but when we desire to have as our portion instead of God, that is when we run into a big problem.

So today, look at your life and see if God is who you run to when you want and need to be filled up? Do you trust and obey God, believing He is all knowing and all sufficient? God is the Great I Am; lets run to Him before anything else.
